SUMMARY OF WEEK 2

Another Saturday goes by, with another one to look forward to next week. So far the college football season has not disappointed. There have been a few games that have come down to the very end, along with some shocking upsets. I have always been a huge fan of SEC football even though I have lived most of my life in Utah. The reason is the intensity in the stadium, the fans are standing and yelling the whole game, it is always so loud and a lot of the games come down to the final minute. South Carolina and Georgia duked it out last night with Georgia getting to celebrate a red zone stand against the South Carolina offense and winning 41-37.

The teams that are handling expectations are Florida, Texas, USC, and Alabama, all have been impressive in some sort of a way. The teams that have surprised me the most are Houston and BYU. BYU it is easy to see why they are surprising, I knew they would be good and before the season started predicted they would win the tough Mt West conference, but I did not see a chance for them to beat the Oklahoma Sooners, but their defense has looked great and I am curious to see if they can ride the momentum the rest of the season. Now I am not a BYU fan, but if they go undefeated and Texas or USC lose, and the SEC teams beat up each other I see no reason why BYU should be left out of the National title game.
The teams that have not lived up to expectations are Florida State and Oregon. I can understand Oregon losing to Boise State because Boise is a solid team, but the way they lost was embarassing (only scoring 8 points?) and then the following week struggling to beat Purdue at home.
The game of the week everyone was looking forward to was USC vs. Ohio State. I was impressed with Ohio State's effort. I felt that USC would win by about 14 points, but they had to work extra hard to leave Columbus with the victory. I am not giving Ohio State any extra points for playing with USC though, if you are to be considered amongst the best you can't just play with them for four quarters, you have to win those games especially when you are at home, and Ohio State still has not proven that they can win the big games.
The best game of the week had to be Georgia Tech vs. Clemson on Thursday night, a great rivalry in the south. I love watching the triple option, and Georgia Tech looks excellent at running it against skilled defenses. I was even more impressed with Clemson's toughness to not fold after being behind 24-7 at halftime. The Tigers climbed back into the game to take the lead, before falling 30-27. Georgia Tech gets to play another Thursday night game this week at Miami. I am looking forward to this one. Only four days away.

BCS BUSTERS LIST (The little guys who want an invitation)

1) Boise State [WAC] Boise State starts the season with a big test. The Oregon Ducks will visit the Blue Turf, if Boise is successful they should be the favorite for the remainder of their games.

2) TCU [Mt West] TCU has a couple of trips to play ACC opponents (Virginia and Clemson) if they can win these games they are on the path, but it comes to more tough games, (@ Air Force, @ BYU, and vs. Utah)

3) Utah [Mt West] Utah crashing the BCS will be difficult this year. They encounter a visit to Oregon on Sept. 19, as well as TCU and BYU in conference games on the road.

4) BYU [Mt West] BYU could be as good as TCU or Boise St (who are the frontrunners to crack the BCS) the problem standing in BYU’s way is national runner-up Oklahoma to open the season, not to mention a game with Florida State a few weeks later.

5) East Carolina [Con USA] East Carolina showed us last year that they can play with the big boys by beating Virginia Tech and West Virginia, they will get the same opportunity this year as they will play both teams again this season, but they will also have to beat North Carolina in Chapel Hill, that will be a daunting task.

6) Houston [Con USA] Houston is possibly the best team in Con USA, but they have non-conference games @ Oklahoma State, and a visit from Texas Tech.

7) Southern Miss [Con USA] Southern Miss returns do-it-all back Damion Fletcher. The Eagles have a tough road game @ Kansas, and tough conference battles against East Carolina, Tulsa, and Houston.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES TO WATCH 2009 PART 1

--NON-BCS CONFERENCES GAMES TO WATCH--

This is a look at the matchups this season that feature non-BCS teams that could tap into the BCS bash.

Matchup Date
Boise State @ Fresno State [Fri. 9/18] Coach Pat Hill always has his Bulldogs ready for big games.

TCU @ Air Force [Sat. 10/14] A trip to Colorado Springs can be a challenge for any team trying to crash the BCS party.

Boise State @ Tulsa [Wed. 10/14] Boise State makes a non-conference trip to Tulsa in what could be a game that lights up the scoreboard.

Boise State @ Hawaii [Sat. 10/24] Two years ago Boise State did not fair well on their trip to the island. Keep an eye out for this one as well.

TCU @ BYU [Sat. 10/24] This will be a showdown, with the winner having a leg up in the Mountain West Conference following the game.

East Carolina @ Tulsa [Sat. 11/7] Depending on how ECU handles its tough non-conference games, this game could have a BCS berth riding on it.

Utah @ TCU [Sat. 11/14] This has been an intense game over the past few years, and it shouldn't change this year.

Utah @ BYU [Sat. 11/28] The Holy War is always entertaining. Already it has had a BCS berth riding on the game twice this century, will it be see the same again this year?
